Shrimp Information
Spot Shrimp (Pandalus platyceros ) Identification: Our largest shrimp, reddish-brown in color, with characteristic white spots on the first and fifth segments of the abdomen and prominent white stripes on the carapace. Legs and antennae strongly banded. Juveniles in shallow water are sometimes green, brown, or red to match the color of surrounding algae or eelgrass. Size: To 10 inches. Range: Alaska to Southern California; Sea of Japan and Korea Strait. Habitat: Found on rocky bottoms and vertical rock faces from the very low intertidal to 1,600 ft.. Remarks: Supports important sport and commercial pot fisheries. Usually found below normal sport diving depths during the daytime but often encountered at night when they move up to forage in shallow water.
Coonstriped Shrimp (Pandalus hypsinotus ) Identification: Carapace with a more arched outline than other pandalids and having more dorsal spines. Sides of carapace conspicuously marked with bright white spots; legs and antennae strongly banded. Abdomen with wide, irregular reddish bands. Size: To 7 and 1/2 inches. Range: Alaska to Puget Sound; also Korea and Japan. Habitat: Found on a very wide range of bottom types, at depths from 15 to 1500 feet. This species does not seem to occur at high densities like other large pandalids, and is usually caught incidentally with other species in trawls and pots. Captive specimens are surprisingly adept at catching smaller shrimp by "caging them" them with their walking legs.
Candy Stripe Shrimp (Lebeus grandimanus) Identification: Distinctively marked with brilliant bands of red, yellow, and blue; although there is considerable variation in the intensity, this shrimp cannot be confused with any other species on the Pacific Coast. Size: To two inches. Range: Bering Sea to Puget Sound. Habitat: Lives in association with sea anemones on both rocky and soft bottoms, at depths of 20 to 600 feet.
